The Golden Hills School Board of Trustees serves as the governing body responsible for the long-term success and sustainability of the school. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public benefit corporation, GHS relies on its Board to provide strategic oversight, fiduciary responsibility, and mission-driven leadership.

The Board is composed of dedicated members, including current or alumni parents or community members with professional expertise in areas such as finance, business, information technology, medicine, and education. Their diverse perspectives and commitment to the school community help guide GHS through thoughtful planning and decision-making.

While the Board does not engage in day-to-day school operations, it plays a critical role in shaping the future of Golden Hills School. Its primary responsibilities include:

  • Long-range planning
  • Oversight of school finances and property
  • Support for major policy initiatives
  • Ensuring alignment with the school’s mission and values

To support its work, the Board operates with three Standing Committees:

  • Executive Committee
  • Trustee Committee
  • Finance Committee

In addition, the Board oversees five Advisory Committees, which are composed of parent volunteers and chaired by Board Liaisons. These committees include:

  • Marketing
  • Development
  • Facilities
  • Technology
  • Strategic Planning

While these Advisory Committees do not hold decision-making authority, they provide valuable insight and recommendations to inform Board actions.

The Board of Trustees works in close collaboration with the Head of School, who is entrusted with the management of daily school operations, academic leadership, faculty and staff supervision, admissions, and communications with parents and the broader community.

Together, the Board and Administration are committed to upholding the excellence, values, and long-term vitality of Golden Hills School—ensuring it continues to be a place where students thrive academically, socially, and personally.

Personal Touch

My heart belongs to dogs! About three years ago we rescued three dachshunds. We did not know much about this quirky little breed, but they have grown to be the best companions.

They have brought a lot of joy to our lives and have taught us a great deal about patience – we had no idea dachshunds were such enthusiastic barkers!

I am working on behalf of Golden Hills School because I feel a deep connection to the individuals who make up the school community. The faculty and staff, students and families inspire me to contribute my time and efforts to enhance the school experience for all. GHS has been a safe haven for my children and I want to share this special place with as many young minds as possible!

Hello! My name is Soojin Kim and I have served as a trustee since 2023. I am the current Secretary and I sit on the Executive Committee and the Risk Management and Audit Committee. I am a current parent at GHS.

I have a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from the University of California at Davis and a J.D. from Lincoln Law School of Sacramento.

Personal Touch

I have been practicing as a solo practitioner in Trusts & Estates for 11 years.

In law school, someone referred to Trusts & Estates as the armpit of law. While the words “trust” and “probate” may cause eyes to roll into the back of one’s head—I love what I do and am insanely passionate about trusts and probate. Outside of work, I am a mom to a darling daughter and we have a guard dog stuck in a mini-schnauzer’s body. My guard dog’s piercing bark alerts me of delivery trucks, raindrops, and falling leaves.

My daughter, Allie, has attended GHS since she was 4. The teachers at GHS have been an integral part of Allie’s life and growth and I want to leave this school better than it is now--for more families and students to enjoy for years to come.

Karen Johnson is a trustee and community member who has served since March 2025 and serves as the Treasurer and sits on the Finance Committee.

Karen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, specializing in accounting, from St. Louis University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Karen has nearly four decades of experience in public service, holding executive roles under Governors Schwarzenegger and Brown. She has served in leadership positions at the Department of Health Care Services, Covered California (State of California’s State Based Marketplace), State Board of Equalization, and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Her focus on modernizing significant systems under her purview, coupled with her role as COO where she led a vast workforce and managed budgets exceeding $100 billion, underscores her status as a transformative leader—a fact validated by numerous awards and recognitions. Her primary mission to boost organizational effectiveness involved shaping, driving, and evaluating operational policies and procedures. Johnson excelled in coordinating day-to-day operations, leading cross-divisional project plans, and addressing issues impacting both operational and financial health, thereby ensuring Covered California’s seamless operation. In addition to her public service career, Karen is a consulting partner at Pinnacle Advocacy in Sacramento, where she leverages her extensive experience to help clients navigate complex government systems.

Personal Touch

I've learned to appreciate the art of compromise and creative problem-solving after managing budgets exceeding $100 billion. It's a skill that comes in handy whether you're at the negotiating table or deciding what to have for dinner with a teenager. And, after nearly four decades in public service, I've mastered the art of listening intently, nodding sagely, and then asking, "But what does the data say?" It's a skill I now use when my family tries to convince me to get a new puppy.

As a new community member on the Golden Hills School Board, I am excited to bring my extensive experience in operational effectiveness, strategic leadership, and rigorous fiscal discipline. My goal is to help support the school's mission, ensure its continued success, and build sustainable financial reserves for the future.

Personal Touch

In 2019, our Head of School asked me if I was interested in joining the Board of Trustees. I'd never served on a board before, but GHS had been wonderful for our family, and I wanted to give back in a meaningful way. Little did I know I would still be on the Board several years later, and serving as past Board Chair. I've loved every minute of this work, even through the most difficult moments, because I believe GHS has given my kids the best start in life. I can never fully repay how our school has prepared, nurtured and challenged my kids into being the best human beings they can be. If I can leave GHS in a better state than when we first enrolled, I'll feel like I've done my duty to a community I love and am eternally grateful for.
