8th Grade Parents and Students:

The students were sent home on Friday the 13th with a two page letter explaining that the 8th grade would be participating in Physics Day at Great America.  As stated in the letter we will be holding Physics Day workshops about once a week.  Parents were welcomed to assist in this project through classroom assistance or obtaining items we need to practice for the competitions.

Speaking of competitions;  the Physics Day at Great America will have three major group competitions that our class will be participating in.  These are the Roller Coaster building, Trebuchet, and Cardboard Boat. There are also six two person competitions, and four individual competitions.

In order to practice for all of these we will be using the Physics Day workshops to learn principles of physics and practice the competitons.  At this point I have scheduled four workshop day in class:
November 19, December 4, December 10, and December 16.  the times are all from 12:34- 1:24 pm in my classroom.

We would really appreciate a donation of any of the following supplies:
(2) 1" X 4" X 6' pine boards:   `                 30 feet of 3/4" clear plastic flexible tubing

10 sections of hotwheels track                    10 sections of copper pipe insulation

Hot wheels launcher                                    4 rolls of 2" duct tape

(10) 1/2-3/4" X 4' shelf brackets                  12-18" wide bubble wrap

Large cardboard boxes:  it takes 120 square feet of cardboard per boat.

30 pieces of 1//2" basswood at least 12" long

10" Balloons

Any parents that can assist in any way please contact me.

The science program for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at GHS will be seperated into Earth Science for 6th grade, Life Science for 7th grade, and Physical Science for 8th grade.  The students will experience a vast variety of lab work and lecture in all of these disciplines.  The format of the courses will also include the relationship of science to other learning areas such as history, literature, math, and writing.

Earth Science

The Earth Science coursework will concentrate on the three major disciplines:  Geology, Meterology, and Enviromental Science.  The school year will start with Geology.  Here the students will learn about rocks and minerals as well as Earth's structure and how everything is related.

Life Science

Life science is broken down into the fields of molecular biology, genetics, physiology, and ecology.  The students will be absorbed in the study of these fields during the year.  Students will gain great insight into life from its smallest component inside of cells to the relationships between kingdoms.

Physical Science

atomThe 8th graders are studying physical science, which is the study of matter and energy and how they interact.  They will spend the first half of the year on chemistry and learn about matter, the periodic table, and how atoms and molecules combine to make new compounds. The students will also learn the law of the conservation of matter. "Matter cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed."

In the second half of the year, they will study physics, which involves force, motion, speed and acceleration. They will do numerous math problems to calculate energy changes. They will learn the law of the conservation of energy. "Energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed."
